Visionaries of the Creative Arts

Cristal Dueñas Tejeda

Cristal Dueñas Tejeda was born a first-generation Mexican-American and grew up in the Bay Area, California. Her pronouns are she/her/hers. As a first-generation graduate of California State University, East Bay with a bachelor's degree in December 2022. She is now a first-year student at Rochester Institute of Technology pursuing a Master of Science in Secondary Education. Throughout her life, she has always been able to express herself through her art. It is her passion to paint artwork that reflects a combination of her cultures, which are Deaf and Mexican cultures. Also, her three self-identities are strongly reflected in her art style: Deaf, Chicana, and Female (Chicana, meaning having Mexican parents or grandparents but being born in the United States). One of the main objectives of her artwork is to invite viewers to explore her experience as a Deaf Chicana growing up, as well as acknowledging the cultural differences that she sees. By showcasing a variety of Latinx artists and people that deserve recognition, she hopes to inspire Latinx children to be proud of who they are, where they come from, and how they express themselves.
